Yes, you need to marry the cd changer to the car for it to function. You can install it, and it will power up with an error message on the SID until it’s married.
Note that on older MYs (before 2002 or 2003), it was a direct plug in to the connector on the changer but in later years (such as in my 2003) there is an additional jumper required that bridges between the car wiring and the CD changer. Not sure about 2004, but don’t be surprised if the connectors don’t match.
