I recall it takes more of a very gentle tug as pulling it sharply will cause it to lock, like if you stopped the car abruptly. It does seem impossible until it suddenly just pulls out. It’s reminds me of last week when I spent about an hour trying to get a banjo bolt on the water pump threaded until it just caught, making me wonder why it took so long. Good luck and maybe come back to it sometime when you are fresh.
