Universal sensors (e.g. Autel or Schrader) themselves may need to be programmed first to imitate "saab" sensors. The car does not need to be programmed. When the car does not see the old sensors it starts looking and if it detects four new sensors traveling with it it just accepts them as new sensors.
It then compares sensor accelerometer data with ABS signals to figure out each sensor location (different wheels rotate with slightly different speed) - this parts sometimes fails to locate the wheels correctly.
