So in the end, the new NSS had a pair of marks on it that align with neutral (the one I got didn't ship in neutral btw). The centerline of those marks align with the centerline of the flats on the shaft, so a strait edge is enough to align things. The Saab tool fits on the flats and extends to the scribe marks. It wouldn't be hard to 3d print a tool for this but I didn't feel I needed to.
My issue of losing correspondence of the clicks on the transmission wrt the shifter was easily resolved by looking at the other car and the arrangement of the cable coupling with the shaft. It only goes on one way. If you don't have a car to reference, you can just align the end of the cable coupling piece to the distance/angle. So all is good. I will try to remember to upload photos later of P and N.
One of the issues is the wis says to put it in L to remove but then to shift to N in the reinstall process, but if the cable is disconnected it might not be clear which is which, clicking the shaft with a wrench and counting.
A deep socket 17mm is useful for the bolt under the dipstick and I used a deep 13mm for the locknut over also.
FWIW, this is an 05 2.3T so possibly different than v6 or older 4 speed trannies.
