Full-face motorcycle helmets MAY impair peripheral vision. I tried on several and found my Shoei RF-800 to have very little loss there.
Open-face helmets, no loss.
Impairing hearing, and that's a bad thing? That's a new one to me. If I'm going to be riding for extended periods, I wear ear plugs. A helmet that fits properly quiets things some, but certainly allows you to hear ambient noises better than in a car with the windows up. But I guess that you must never close your windows or turn on the stereo, you don't want to impair your hearing.
Intelligent people can argue whether motorcyclists should be legislated to wear helmets, but anyone who argues that they don't create a safer riding experience are idiots. I'm not saying that people who ride without helmets are idiots, but they are weighing risks. Myself, the benefits of wearing a helmet outweigh the risks. I'm quite fond of my head.
