I lease a 2001 Saab 9-5 LPT and own a 1989 Volvo 760T so I feel I am qualified to rpost a response. The problem with a 10+ year old car is that it is hopelessly out of date. I worry about a family member driving the Volvo which met the safety standards of more than a decade ago (but thank goodness, being a Volvo, it at least has a single airbag, ABS and is built like a tank). Also, regular maintenance and repair bills on Volvos, like Saabs, are very expensiuve. Leasing, on the other hand, makes a lot of sense if you are not a high-mileage driver. A new car with up-to-date gadgets every 3-4 years that is never out of warranty (i.e. no repair bills) and regular maintenance is included for Saabs. With Saab's current lease plan, you would need to find a lender crazy enough to give you a 9-year loan at 6% interest to reduce your loan payment to match the lease payment, even with Saab's generous purchase subsidies. Affordability aside, I still believe it is more advantageous to lease than to buy.
