Hi Marv, et al.

In all the cars that I have owned, I have never used a drive-thru carwash. Typically, these car washes have brushes that trap grit that can leave fine scratches - or worse. In addition, almost all of the new car wash facilities recycle their water through the use of settling tanks and additional chemical additives. The water quality varies considerably. While I appreciate the need to conserve water, I handwash at my house using a boar's hair brush from Griot's - and use less than ten gallons of water (2-3 toilet flushes in volume comparison). I use the spray detailers in-between washes. When travelling, I use used the hand-held sprayers a self-serve carwashes being careful not to let the high pressure stream get into the lights/locks/seams, etc.

Remember, keeping lots of high quality carnuba wax on the surfaces is the key to avoiding hair line scratches (damn the clearcoats, anyway!). If you choose to use car washes out of necessity, most of teh damage introduced by the brushes can be dealt with using clay/cleaners and then a finish wax.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that they are JUST cars...
