We have a 01 Aero with 9000 miles on it, about one year old. It's been a great car, and we've had a BMW 328i, a Lexus RX300, and others, in the past.

Here are my comments with respect to your issues:

* Road noise (seems to be reduced by closing the sunroof shade?)

Seems to completely come from the tires. Replace the tires, and you shouldn't have a problem.

* Torque steer (could be somewhat mitigated by less aggressive driving?)

Very very minimal, and only under full throttle.

* Gearshift feel (gets better with use?)

It's not bad for a cable linkage unit. Not honda smooth, but pretty good. Throws are a bit too long for my taste.

* More rapid depreciation than other cars in its class (lease instead of buy or hold it forever?)

Very true.

* Headlights fail too soon

Haven't had this happen.

The only negative we've had with the car is that there's a slight rattle from the instrument panel. That's it! Overall, it's a great car. For a "mid-size" car, I can't think of one I'd rather own. It has a huge interior, huge back seat, and a huge trunk. Lots of HP, and fun to drive. We've been renting Volvo S80's when we go out of town, which I perceive as the 9-5's closest competitor. It's a nice car, but waffles all over the road, has a smaller backseat, and the trunk space is much tinier. If you want a mid-sized car with a five-speed, I don't think there's any other choice! For a smaller car, I'd go withthe BMW 3 series still. For a larger car, it's hard to say.
