Eric: It's not so much that Saab picked those manufacturers you mentioned as special, but it's the functions that those manufacturers provide on the little multi pin connector on the phone that make the difference. The phone needs to provide an audio output signal, a mute line,+12 volts input, ground, and have an input for keypad lighting. The lighting is not a separate 12 volt input, but rather it is a sense signal that tells it that it is connected to full time 12 volts in. In addition, the phone should have an input that provides ignition sense, which would allow the phone to turn on when you start the car, and turn off when you shut down.
ALthough many Nokia phones do this, the newest 6300 series does not, so the point is that the phone manufacturers dont always know what standards and connections that most people will want or use.
Much of this confusion will go away as Bluetooth communications protocols become standard. This will allow a car( like the new 9-3), to adapt to any bluetooth compatable phone that you use, then the only thing that the phone holder will do is provide +12 volts and a place for the phone to rest.
I've had the hands free setup in both my 9-5s now, and think it is one of the nicest features that the car offers. Unless you are wedded inseparably to your current phone, and it cannot be made to work, I would get a Nokia 6000 series and the CAR91K car kit, figure on about an hour of professional installer time, and you will be all set. YOu also need a 15 dollar harness from Saab
Good Luck
