Putting batteries under the seat or trunk can get around some installation issues, but it is not always a good idea.
Batteries produce hydrogen gas when they are charging. Hydrogen is explosive and if allowed to accumulate in an enclosed area can create a dangerous situation. Special batteries are made to allow for external venting, but if an owner replaces it with a regular aftermarket unit, it may not have the proper venting ports which would allow it to simply vent to its surrounding area. Not good.
My Miata has a trunk mounted battery, but it is a totally sealed AGM type - and costs a small fortune to replace!
