The SP9000 is _not_ a suitable winter tire, in spite of its tread pattern. Especially since you are in real snow country.
There are some other high performance all season tires, but the compromises they make are not worth it, IMHO. They have less performance in the dry, when you want it. And less performance in the snow, when you need it.
My wife's Audi A4 quattro is running Goodyear Eagle UltraGrip GW2 snow tires for winter. They give up some dry pavement performance, and won't work as well as Alpins or Hakkas on frozen roads, but are an excellent choice for her car because of the AWD and the fact we rarely see much snow here. They are superb in rain. If I did not already have a set of Dunlop SP8000s for summer, I might consider using the Goodyears year round..... Naaaah!!!
If you look at the photo of the Goodyears, you will notice the similar tread pattern to the SP9000, but the winter tire has a zillion sipes that allow the tire to work better in wet and frozen conditions. All winter tires also have different rubber compunds that stay pliable below 40 degrees F, while regular tires start to harden and lose traction.
Two sets is definitely the way to go for a FWD Canadian car.
