Glad you enjoyed your rental. The 9-5 in whatever flavor is a very easy and enjoyable car to live with--whether for a weekend or a year.
I've had one opportunity to play tag for many miles w/ an LPT4 on the highway, and can say that the V6 did pull away easily each time. The difference wasn't dramatic but was definitely there. What I can't say is whether the other car was of the 170 or 185 hp variety. The "off-the-line" acceleration also feels stronger than the LPT4, but I've never done this side by side.
Road noise is a direct product of the stock tires. Ask around here re. reducing it by switching brands--many have. I get no high speed sway of any kind. I'd guess that it can likely be reduced or eliminated by playing with tire inflation pressures.
