recently finished putting the very expensive for what you get motorola hands free kit for the star-tac in my 9-5 wagon. First problem is that the star-tac does not supply a ground signal when ringing to activate the mute function in the car stereo. This was solved by using a seperate toggle switch to provide a ground signal to mute the stereo. To hear the phone ring you need to hook up the external speaker in the kit, I tied it up under the passenger seat. Now to the quality of the kit......the design of the thing was obviously not done by anyone who had anything to do with the design of the star-tac. Putting the phone in the cradle requires two hands and then plugging a big thick coily cord wire (looks like it's from one of those police car radios) into the bottom of the phone. And if your phone is on when you plug it in, it turns your phone off, so you have to turn it on again. But the worst part about the whole thing is the sound quality from the microphone is absolutely disgusting. I first used the mic in the car, and it was terrible. then I tried the mic in the kit and it is only good if it's about three inches away from your mouth----not too practical.
The nokia kit is much better quality, and the sound from it is perfect. It sounds just like a normal phone conversation. Also the phone just pops right into the mount with out hooking up any wires. The mounting base for the nokia is much better looking than the motorola also. But the best thing is that the nokia phone supplies the mute signal to the stereo---when the phone rings, the sid panel says telephone and the stereo turns off, you push a button on the phone and answer your call.
This is my experience from installing both kinds of phone kits in 2000my 9-5's with no on-star .
