Capacitive discharge ignition systems have been around since the late 60s, but reliabilty has always been an issue. Reliability has much improved in correspondence with improved power handling capabilities of SCRs, and there are after market units, but I think they all work with ignition wires out to the plugs. I believe Saab probably runs the 120V ionization detection current off the DI power supply, and the combustion module may be part of the DI interior as well.
I think what concerns some posters about DI failures is that the evolution of ignition systems over the years has produced a greater degree of reliability and expectations of greater reliabilty than what is experienced in the Saab implementation of direct ignition. I do not know what other auto makers use capacitve discharge direct ignition systems, many use an inductive coil at the plug to eliminate wires, which has proven to be very reliable.
