A most peculiar noise? Familiar?

We're just coming up to a month with our auto 9-5 Aero, and I'm well chuffed with it: the best car I've had, although that's not saying much.
The last few days however we've starting getting a most peculiar occasional noise, shortly after shifting into gear from park. It only lasts a few seconds, and is a bit difficult to describe, but I'll have a go. It's a rapidly accelerating mid-to high frequency whine, like a turbine or very high speed pump building up to pressure, and is really quite loud: after it we felt the transmission was whining a bit, but this may have been hyper-sensitive.
I look after the computers at my office, among other thankless tasks, and am myself a master of the engineer's sympathetic yet condescending smile when intermittent problems refuse to replicate themselves, so I'm loath to go the dealer yet!
Does this ring any bells with the experts out there? Since the engine is idling, this surely can't be the turbo: it also seems to come more from the central front floor, rather than the engine bay itself.
