John's comments are excellent but from an OCD detailers perspective I prefer polymer sealants over "wax" as most all waxes do not hold up to the harsh conditions wheel are subject to. A wax will melt (evaporate actually) at 180F where most polymers can go 300F or higher. Plus a sealant will hold up better to wheel cleaners and all the grime they get coated in.
I remove and detail my wheels 3X per year. Also fully detail my wheelwells too. I like Klasse on my wheels as its a proven tough sealant. But Zaino, Blackfire, and Platinum all work very well. Hell, you could use NuFinish in a pinch.
