Hey ,
All of the advice is excellent. In the summer - wax can have a relatively short life span on wheels if you do a lot of aggressive driving - the flange area of the wheel can become damn hot. But, in the winter - it doesn't happen and road salts are destructive. I run Bobet Type T 17x8 five-spoke wheels in winter (easy to clean). I put on wax at every rotation (4-5 weeks for me) and after a wash I put a spray of silicone if its snowing to repel some of the salt [I know its just a ptiful lipophylic barrier to an oxidizing agent - no snide responses please - this is a metaphor of fancy, you know. All this stuff is probably not worth a damn - but its cheaper than heroine and less time consuming than horse racing :-)].
All kidding aside, On my SUV's which travel barrier beaches and ocean edges (for my work as a field biologist) - this strategy keeps the wheels looking decent for a few years.
The road salts of winter are an environmental insult that compensates for poor winter driving skills and lack of preparation typical of some American drivers - but it is a reality...
Cheers,
Eric
