Of course, as valid as it is to argue the lack of a contamination parameter, I think the oil life monitor is essentially just set for an oil of the quality of Mobil 1. I do have to say that since ALL the M1 products now meet either ACEA A3 or A5 ratings, any viscosity would survive until the monitor says so. I wouldn't run an A1 or A2 rated oil using it, but then I won't even run an A5 rated oil in my turbocharged car. So while I do agree with your argument, I don't think the monitor's set for a specific viscosity.

I think you meant to say,
"The only difference between *[A5/B5]* and A3/B3 is the viscosity - specifically HTHS..."
since there are quite a few differences between A1/B1 & A3/B3. Also, don't forget about the slight fuel economy benefit of A5 over A3 (0.9%) as a result of that lower HT/HS viscosity (ie, "lower HT/HS protection").

I still recall reading somewhere that the base oil for the 0W-40 was different than that used for the xW-30s. If I can find it, I'll let you know.
