9-5 Catalytic converter odor - normal? Posted by Adam [Email] (#344) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Adam) on Thu, 15 Mar 2001 21:06:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My wife drives a '99 9-5 Wagon, which we pruchased new in Dec. '99. For as long as we can remember, there is frequently a nearly asphyxiating rotten-egg odor eminating from the catalytic converter.
The dealer told us to use a different brand of gasoline. We did for several thousand miles and same story. I called the Saab customer assitance center, and after numerous conversations, they arranged for the factory rep to see the car. He says that there's nothing that they can do. That it has to do with the amount of sulfur in the gasoline. Essentially, Saab is saying this issue is *normal*.
I've been driving cars with catalytic converters since they were introduced in 1975 - at least a dozen cars since then. Never have we experienced this issue with another vehicle.
My wife wanted to buy a Lexus RX-300 initially, and I convinced her to get the Saab. Now she wants to dispose of this car unless we can resolve this stinky issue.
Anyone have any luck with getting a resolution from Saab on this problem? Suggestions as to how to remedy the situation?
Thanks.
