The hitch integrates into the bumper beam as well as the mount under the spare tire well. I don't think there's any significant change to the rear impact function, though. As it came from the factory, on the two ends the bumper beam is just pressed up against the car frame - with a single bolt to hold it in place. When the tow bar is attached, the instructions are to remove the bumper, replace an eighth-inch-thick aluminum pad with a bracket that wraps around the bumper channel and bolts in top and bottom. Then the single bolt holding the bumper end to the frame is replaced with three of them (one hole to drill, two already drilled). The draw tite, as shown here, uses just two bolts for the center section - the Saab unit uses four, I think, and then also bolts to the bumper beam. The Draw Tite as shown adds its own beef (and weight) to the bumper end frames.
The Saab hitch is definitely a PITA to install - the backing-up-alarm doesn't make it any easier, either.
It sure is solid, though.
