I agree with all your points, Paul.

You know, I have heard all these stories of unreliable SAABs over the years, and I wonder where they all are? I have owned 14 SAABs over the past 38 years, every model from a 1964 2-stroke 96 to my present 1996 9000 CS, and I have found ALL of my SAABs to be extremely reliable and relatively trouble-free cars. Yes, I tend to follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual, but I'm not a fanatic about maintenance. You also have to "listen" to your car, pay attention to it, and when something doesn't sound right, take it to your mechanic rather than just ignore it until something breaks. I also try to drive carefully and not abuse my SAABs, but that doesn't mean that I pamper them - I like to drive fast and enjoy the super handling of my SAABs, so I don't drive like the classic "grandpa." Over all those years of driving SAABs, I have only been stranded 4 times: once in a snow bank on an Interstate in northern PA in a 99 (I was driving too fast for conditions, so you can't blame SAAB for that); twice for flat tires (not a SAAB mechanical problem); and once when the accessory belt on my 9000 broke from wear.

During most of my 38 years of SAAB ownership, we have owned other brands of cars, both foreign and American, and the SAABs were consistently the lowest cost per mile cars that I have owned.

I'm not saying that those people who have had problems with their SAABs are lying (any manufacturer can make a lemon, and any long-term SAAB dealership can tell you about certain years when even SAAB had more problems than other years; 1975 99s or 1994 new generation 900s, for example), but I do wonder if the problems they have could have been avoided if they had been "listening" to their SAABs and maintaining them correctly.
