I just completed a 4000 mile roundtrip from Princeton NJ to Austin TX in my 1999 9-5 with about 55,000 miles. On the return to Princeton I noticed a noise after turning the engine off that I had never noticed before. Upon inspection it was noted that the noise was coming from a device in front of the battery. Later my dealer informed me that it is called the secondary air injection pump. They were not sure what purpose it serves or what it means if it runs more. Prior to this trip I had never heard it run before. Therefore it is either running more than before or is louder than before or traveling to Austin and listening to much music improved my hearing and nothing on the car has changed. What does this device do and if it runs more what does that mean?
An aside. My wiper motor gave out on the trip back. It blew fuse 37. The manual indicates that this 30 amp fuse has both the wipers and the front fog lamp in its circuit. The fog lamps still worked. The dealer said this must be an error in the owners manual.
