I took Driver's Ed at my high school a long time ago and learned to drive in a big huge Chevy Impala. Got my license, and since all of our cars were manual, I had no choice but to learn. I got in our VW Bug, with my Dad, and he said "OK, drive". Well, it took a few tries, but I did it. Been driving a stick ever since, and that's a long time! I've been having thoughts about teaching my son in a few years, on my Aero... help! At least by then it will be well broken in.
I'm assuming he already knows how to drive an automatic? Try to let him get the feel of the two pedals separately, then work on combining them. I remember I didn't give the Bug any gas, and it stalled. I figured that out fairly quickly, after that it was easy (my Dad just sat there and didn't say anything). But every car has a slightly different feel to it. Once he gets the feel of where the clutch grabs, hopefully it will all come together. Don't forget to teach him how to start with the emergency brake in case he is on a hill and uncomfortable about possibly rolling backward.
Good Luck, let us know how it goes!
