I have both an '01 Aero Wagon and a '00 A4 1.8T quattro. The A4 is chipped to 205 bhp/ 240 ft lbs. The Aero is stock 230 bhp/ 258 ft lbs.
If you are coming from a quattro, a word of caution: be _very_ sure that you can live with the (here it comes) TORQUE STEER of the Aero. I know there will be a bunch of noise about this from the forum - the car is not that stable under hard acceleration, esp on worn pavement. It requires concentration and some slight steering corrections to keep the car headed exactly where you want it. Also, at 80+ mph, I just don't feel comfortable in the Aero without both hands on the wheel. By comparison the Audi feels like it is on rails at all times and at any speed. Don't get me wrong, I love my Aero. But I would love it 100 times more if it were AWD.
Be sure to do a prolonged test drive of that Aero before you commit.
