Tranny adjustment?

I'm experiencing what feels like a hesitation - sometimes it feels like a thunk - when the car is decelerating and shifts down at around 40 mph, and not exactly a smooth shift up to top gear under acceleration - also most noticeable at 40 mph. I have the V6 auto and I'm anxious to get this issue settled before my warranty goes bye-bye in roughly 8K miles from now. Could this be a tranny problem? Are there adjustments that can be made? Is it possible it's related to some other issue - throttle related? So far all my dealer has had to say is, "performing as designed". Really? Any suggestions much appreciated.
Cheers,
AlanF
