But it's not 1996 anymore, & oil standards have progressed a long, long way since then. What was API back then, SH? (I'm not sure.) Now it's SL (two progressions beyond SH). And ACEA has updated their ratings three times since then as well (in '98, '99 & '02). These aren't the same oils! Base stocks are higher quality. Additive packages are more finely tuned.
Admittedly, there are some specs of questionable value. The new GM-LL-A-025 is one of these, as oils meeting this spec don't all meet the same ACEA spec. ACEA provides a type of standardization for quality, so this new, unknown spec from GM is obviously NOT adhering to these known standards.
So, while I can agree that 0W-xx oils were insufficient in the mid-'90s, I think current oils are more than capable of proper protection.
