For those who care I completed the install of a Nokia handsfree system in my 2001 Aero on Thursday. Since the 01 has Onstar I needed to purchase an additional unit called the "Triad". The Triad lets the handsfree system work without disrupting Onstar functionality. With shipping and install kit it was about U$120.
First lets talk about the results. Everything works as Triad said it would. There were no real problems during the install and the instructions were clear. Jim UHL, the engineer behind the Triad, is just a phonecall away if there are any issues.
One glitch is that people that I am calling say they can hear a small amount of whine that changes pitch with engine speed. I suspect this is because the new wires I ran to the Saab mic are not shielded. The wires on the Nokia mic are shielded. I had a friend call me from my car and the noise is slight in my case, but still could be seen as annoying. I think I am going to work on it a little more when I get time. I will probably give Jim Uhl a call and pick his brain a bit.
The install process: It is much more complicated than that in a 2000 or earlier model that does not have Onstar. You no longer need to buy the wiring harness from Saab. (Instead of the $20 connector from Saab you need to buy the $120 black box from Jim) It involves cutting three wires on the back of your Saab's radio, and tapping into a few more. You also need to either run new wires to the existing microphone (that's the way I did it) or use the Nokia mic. If you elect to run the new mic wires, there is more dissasembly of the vehicle involved. (I removed the glove box, the passenger side a pillar trim and the overhead console.) If you are not comfortable with wiring in your vehicle or taking your brand new car apart I would not advise that you do this yourself. Have a professional do it.
