I did use the special tool. I purchased it at my local Saab dealer for around ten or fifteen dollars. From a materials standpoint it isn't worth that much money, but it does make the radio come out quite easily. I had a lot of trouble getting the radio out of the sleeve on my '00 9-5 using coat hangers, drill bits and allen keys. For that reason I bought the tool.

Once you pull the radio out of the sleeve you will also need to remove the sleeve from the car. After that you just snip three wires (speaker +/- and mute) and tap into three others. (Ground, +12v, and switched 12V). The microphone connections are done in the overhead console. To get the wires routed neatly I pulled the glovebox, a-pillar trim, overhead console and sun visor.
