I sell Audi's but own Saabs. The Allroad is very nice and has surprisingly good off road capabilities. My only complaint is that it does ride surprisingly rough in the back seat, but not the front seats. Don't ask me why. It does have twin turbos and a fairly complex air suspension--even our Audi techs are wondering what it might be like in terms of reliability when it gets some miles on it. The A6 Quattro Avant (wagon) might be a better choice since it doesn't have the air suspension and can be had with a normally asperated V6--though it is a little pokey without the turbos. Audis do seem to be fairly expensive to maintain though. I'm often rather amazed at some of the repair bills these car have--even fairly new ones. My Saab (91 9000--140,000 miles) has been a lot cheaper to own. The question you need to ask is if you really need offroad capabilities or do you just like the extra abiltiies in the snow? There is no doubt that any Audi Quattro is just plain phenomenal in snow(on the road)--better than any sport ute on the market. The other question is how often will you actually use this capability, and are you willing to pay the extra it costs (in terms of fuel economy, extra weigh, complexity etc.) to have such a system. I live in Michigan and have a 100 yard long driveway. My Saab gets me eveywhere I need to go and didn't get stuck once this winter in spite of some pretty bad conditions. If things got so bad my Saab wouldn't make it, odds are nothing would be open anyway and I be better off staying home. My Saab is almost as good as the Audi in the majority of conditions I face and I think is a pretty good compromise. It's your money, good luck.
