The Long Departed and Unlamented Simca (TLDAUS _ 1200 cc 5-door, blue with black interior, maybe 2100 lb) struggled to achieve 30 mpg until late in life (Uhm, that was 60,000 miles for that thing), when mileage crept into the low thirties (this is highway). Had the experience with most of the Saabs, including the current one (Aero Wagon, blue with black interior). MPGs have improved measurably over the break-in period (still under 10K - who has time to drive?). A remarkable history achievement, imo, now with almost twice the mass and four times the power as TLDAUS.
Biggest two impediments to extremely high mileage are the weight of the Wagon (pushinb past 1 3/4 tons) and the driver's right foot. You can control the latter, especially by refraining from pressing the "S" on the a/t lever (if you have one) - except in heavy traffic where it's vital for "station keeping".
