Here's my chronology- 1996 900SE coupe, 1999 9-5SE Sedan, then traded in the 900 for a 2001 9-5 wagon. Total luggage space between the coupe and the 9-5 wasn't a lot different if you fold the seats down and pack both of them up. You can get bulkier stuff in the hatch, such as the 32 inch TV I took home in the box. You can't get that in any trunk, and it barely fit in the 900. The note someone else made about folding the seats down was true. You have to push the seats forward in a 900/9-3 to get the seats folded, but you don't have to in a 9-5. Fun to drive factor goes to the 900/9-3. It was a blast to drive. The 9-5 is great on the highway, but not as quick as I would like.
The interesting thing is that we got the wagon because the dog was getting too big for the 900, but now I wish we had traded in the 9-5 for the wagon instead of the 900. We could only carry the dog and a limited amount of luggage in the 900, and that was with the seats folded down. With the wagon we can carry two dogs, and four people, or our dog and lots of luggage.
