I haven't looked under our 9-5 yet, but is it possible to change the oil from above using a suction device and get to the filter from the top?
I use a Liqui-Vac (I think that's what it's called, Topsider is another type) to change the oil on my daughter's VW New Beetle TDI. It sucks the oil out of the dipstick tube, and it works quite well. Of course, the oil filter on th VW diesel is on top of the engine. The Beetle, like some other cars, has a plastic panel under the engine that you have to remove to get to the oil drain plug.
For my Mercedes Benz 280SL, I use the Rhino ramps, because you can't reach the filter from the top. For my Ford pickup and Ford van, no ramps are needed because of the ample ground clearance.
Unless I goof up and don't have the drain pan in the right place, I rarely spill more than a drop or two doing my own changes, and I know the job is done right.
For the record, the vehicle that was hardest to change oil on was a 1985 Volvo 740 Turbo. Access to the filter was very hard, and to make it worse, it required an oil change every 3,750 miles. The easiest was a 1985 Mercedes Benz 300D. The drain plug was close to the front of the engine (no ramps or jacks needed) and the filter was on top, Like most diesels, it used a replacable element, and could be changed without spilling a drop.
