It kind of defeats the idea of an "automatic" transmission but you can shift an automatic just like a regular transmission. I use 3rd gear a lot around town, usually with sport mode. I find the car more reponsive and also it allows me to use the brakes less often. When descending really steep grades you can use 2nd or even 1st, but remember to shift up to 3rd or Drive at the bottom of the grade, or you will find yourself really revving the engine at 35 MPH.:o)
