Just to repost here--SID is NOT accurate, but is reliable. Measure it against your fill-ups, try to do separate starting fill-up for along highway trip.
Also, the break-in comments held on our car, significant increases up over 10,000 miles.
Short trips--Not good, it seems to take upwards of 3 miles in the morning commute where the mileage is dropping a bit per the SID until the engine is optimized (approximately, depending on weather)
Tire pressures are important, I find this car drives fine on 36 on the OEM tires, and I'd bet I can go higher. AC on is also a bit of a drag, especially in the city. Hard accelerations will have a negative effect on mpg. Especially in stop and go, you sometimes have to ask yourself how fast you have to get up to a speed that you will shortly have to drop down from.
There is no reason with reasonably careful driving (and that does not have to take all the fun out) that you should not be able to meet the EPA city estimates and beat their highway figures.
