I have a 2000 9-5 Aero with 5-speed manual which I purchased new. It now has 22K miles and has been basically problem free. Most problems to date have been minor and include,
> a rattling rear view mirror
> the gear shift boot detaching from the center console
> replacement of the driver side seat heating switch
> replacement of a front headlight bulb
All of these were done in the first two years of ownership and covered under warranty. The only thing I do not like about the car design is the front brake pad/rotor wear issue. The front brake pads and rotors wear very quickly and once the brake pads need replacement the rotors are to thin to true(lathe) and must be replaced.
My dealer is very helpful and responsive and adds an incredible amount to the overall pleasure of owning the car. Check to make sure you like the dealer in your area, and more specifically, their service department personnel.
As a side note, I just spent a weekend driving several '03 9-5 Aeros to determine if I wanted to purchase my car, coming off lease, or buy a new vehicle. I came away from the experience happy to purchase the '00 Aero. Even with the current financial incentives and design "enhancements" the '00 Aero turned out to be a better overall value for me.
After three years, I can strongly recommend the vehicle. What other car can you buy that cruises comfortably, and safely, all day at 85 MPH and returns 32 MPG?
Good luck.
