I sincerely hope what happened to me isn't your problem. It doesn't sound like the same think, but here goes. I noticed a couple of small specks on the hood while washing my 99 9-5 about 18 months ago. When I picked at it with my nail, the paint came off down to bare metal. Then I looked around and noticed them all over the fender, door, hood, and a couple of other places. After taking it to a local paint shop, I found out that a number of cars had come in with the same problem, and their hypothesis was that someone had put acid in the windshield washing buckets at some local gas stations. My wife had used the squeegee from the gas station to wash both the front and rear windows, and where it dripped on the car, the acid ate through the paint. $250 deductible on my insurance policy later, the car is good as new, but I will never use a gas station squeegee again. For long road trips I carry my own with a bottle of windex.
