You need something much more robust than a paper clip, something that you can hold fast and apply considerable force with.
The clip holding the back in place appears to be several times thicker than it needs to be. I'm guessing over well over 50 lbs of force is required to depress it far enough to allow the back to come off easily. However, with 20, 30 lbs of force, and some serious prying on the cover it will come off.
I used an 0.050" allen wrench that is held in a plastic set with a dozen or so wrenches. That way, the is held fast (more or less) and I could apply some serious force on the key, and on a small jeweler screwdriver to pop the cover off. I don't think any damage was done. Before reassembly, I'll look at filing some of the tab away, as Bill R suggests.
So, the trick is to get something more robust than a paper clip, place it in a bench vise or similar constraint, press like crazy, and pry.
I'm hoping that the dealer won't charge me anything to program (since they're already hooked up for 20k service) so I wanted to replace the battery so that a bad battery wouldn't add to tech's troubles (or my charges). No place around here carries a Panasonic CR 1632. Not Radio Shack, not even Batter Plus, a store that only sells batteries. Hopefully the dealer stocks them if it's needed tomorrow.
