But the fact is that today, the painting process is much more reproducable than perhaps 15-20 years ago, and cars have been designed with this in mind. Think of the consequences of what would happen if every time a manufacturer or distributor or dealer hada car and by accident, something got slightly damaged. Would we expect them to just scrap that vehicle? In this country we go through something like 12 million new cars and trucks a year. Obviously in the course of manufacturing, shipping, preparation, and handling, some of them will get some form of damage. They HAVE to be repaired. I would expect to payless for such a vehicle than for one with a virgin finish, but chances are the repaint will be done to match the rest of the paint,it will hold up over time, and most of all, for gosh sakes, "it's just a car, everyday transportation". If you are buying a garage queen, and just plan on showing it or polishing it every weekend, that might be different, but for an everyday car,in the course of owning it, you will probably pick up a scratch or two over the years. A good body and paint shop can safely repaint a fender or a bumper to match most factory finishes. I would just have the dealer knock off a few bucks to give me a little insurance that the residual value of my car compared to ones that had no damage is equal.
