I have not done this yet (shame on me) so I don't have personal insight, but here are the factory instructions regarding proper sequence and materials, and instructions from friends who have done this before regarding the process.

1. You will need nearly a quart of DOT4 fluid, harder to find than DOT3. Do not use DOT5! Brake fluid is an aggresive solvent on automotive paint, don't spill it on any painted surfaces!
2. You will also need one of the following; a friend who can follow instructions, a one-person vacuum bleeder (~$35USD), or a simple pressure bleeder (~$40USD)
3. Using a Turkey Baster, remove the old fluid from the master cylinder and replace with new.
4. Start with the Left Front wheel. Remove rubber dust cap from bleeder fitting on wheel brake cylinder. If using a friend, crack open bleeder fitting and then yell out "Open". Have friend depress brake pedal all the way and yell out "Full stroke" or something similar. You then need to retighten bleeder fitting and yell out "Closed". Friend is to release brake pedal then yell out "Released". You will crack open the bleder again and yell out "Open". Friend will depress pedal completely and yell out "Full stroke". Etc. Continue until new fluid flows out of bleeder fitting.
5. Top off master cylinder, move to Right rear wheel and repeat process.
6. Top off master cylinder, move to Right front wheel and repeat process.
7. Top off master cylinder, move to Left rear wheel and repeat process.
8. Top off master cylinder, job finished.

Easiest method is with the pressure bleeder. Using a low pressure source of air (20psi) such as a compressor or partially deflated spare tire, you replace the confusing portion of steps 4,5,6 & 7 with the much simpler task of cracking open the bleeder and watching the fluid flow into your collection pan/bottle until new fluid flows out of the bleeder fitting. Close bleeder and go to next wheel in the sequence.

New fluid is nearly clear (unless you purchase something with a distinct dye added) and old fluid is the color of dark honey (hopefully not darker!)
