Sounds like you inadvertantly knocked the ignition key cutting power - it doesn't take much to do - I speak from experience having had power cut on me a few times. An errant sleeve on your shirt or similar can very easily knock it just enough to quit power.
Most recently, it happened to me in my '02 Aero, during a steep descent of one of our local hills. I moved the auto down into 3rd to get a bit of Engine braking, and in the process the palm of my hand brushed the key. That was enough for power to be cut completely. So there I was, wondering what the heck was happening, with no engine power on a steep hill. Took me a few too many seconds to realise what had happened.
As much as I like the central key position, it is as much a safety liability, as it is an asset in its current configuration. There should be some kind of interlock/resistanct to make it harder to inadvertantly knock it "off". I did wonder what would have happened had I not realised what was going on, with potential loss of brake servo vacuum and power steering. I'm frankly surprised there hasn't been a recall on this.
