Sure one can always buy cheaper or more extensive
insurance. But having lived in CA I must say that
the way the system works in CA is 18th century style
when you compare it to W.Europe.
No insurance company in W.Europe would dare to qualify
a car as too powerfull or such a crap... They would also never
ask for a premium cause its a Turbo. However they may
decide not to insure you if you have a bad driving record.
In most places only crashes count as bad driving, not your
driving record from the DMV. They may also refuse coverage
if you're 18 and plan to drive a Porsche Turbo. As you can't
get license plates without proof on insurance, anyone can
buy a Porsche Turbo, but not everyone can get license plates for it ;)
Also, if you insure your car and you have children, only YOUR
driving record counts, there is no expensive premium cause your
19 year old is gona drive your Aero on occassions. But if he crashes
it, your rate will go up. (only on the 2nd time cause the first
crash/accident does not increase your rate)
What they look at is:
a) Value of car
b) Your age
c) Your car color (red = high rate)
d) Your driving record (number of claims you have made, accidents, crashes)
e) Where you live and where you go to work
'e) Some countries look at the car model as well
The simple system of pooling cars by value has quite a few
advantages, as minorities, special cars etc are not penalized by it.
The fact that you have or don't have theft deterent systems in
your car is not considered when you insure the car cause, by law
all new cars must be equipped and insurance companies do provide
lists of areas where they will not cover theft. (Italy is such a place)
So being a 40 year old women driving a $30000 Minivan will cost you
about the same as if you were 28 and drove a $30000 sports car, the
rate will be near identical.
I can only condem systems where you pay more or less cause you are
white, female, a SAAB driver or some other reason, that all just
rip off tactics by the insurance companies. Its like saying that
night driving is dangerous cause 50% of all accidents occur then,
remind you that on average over a year 1day=12 hours.
I also think that qualifiying someone as a bad driver cause he
gets a few speeding tickets or tickets for bad parking is just
Media BS, in the end if you look at who has the big expensive
crashes some things become very apparent.
1) Inexperienced drivers (no matter what age)
2) People driving non properly maintained cars
3) People that are unable to pay attention
4) People that are trying to impress someone
5) Cars that are BAD BY DESIGN and unfit for normal street use
6) People that believe that ABS, ESC and the crap will help em out

P.S. CA drivers are a joke on rain and snow LMAO
