The end of the incident and some conclusions Posted by IanC [Email] (#139) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IanC) on Wed, 8 Oct 2003 03:55:35 In Reply to: Re: Idler pully is a definite possibility, compaqted, Tue, 7 Oct 2003 13:41:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Drove into garage first thing before work. Went slowly on kerb lane on dual carriageway. Belt went 1 minute before reaching garage. Mechanic drove car in with no power steering. Verdict - idler pully had gone, taking out belt. Being fixed today. Conclusion: belt changed 2 years/19k miles ago, but idler wasn't, as other correspondents suggest, good idea to change idler at same time as belt. Somewhat annoyed to have a full blown breakdown. My previous Vauxhall (GM) Omega also broke down with cambelt going (and taken out engine). Frustrating to have a chain, but still to have a belt with many functions and pulleys and prone to breakdown - although doesn't seem to take engine out as fails. I have also replaced the DI cassette today (garage reckons these are a greater cause of breakdown than belts) at 85k miles. So I hope that I have today replaced the two likely causes of future breakdowns on my 98 4 cylindar. PS I looked at the new 93 in the garage. Looks almost identical to 95 inside and in trunk.
