Manual and don't look back

I have a 2000 non-Aero wagon with MT, and even though I live in deepest Brooklyn and spend most of my time at a veritable crawl, I don't regret for an instant having a manual.
There are two main reasons. THe first is least important, but underlies my decision: I've got enough automatic crap in my life without adding one more thing. I don't need yet another machine in my life from which I'm separated by a thick layer of gauze. I just want an honest, straightforward relationship with this device, one in which I do the thinking and I make the decisions about when to shift.
Second, it's just more fun. I originally thought I'd buy an auto Passat--my wife would get auto and I'd have option of manual shifting (clutchless). But I drove a friend's and it Just. Wasn't. Fun. Then I drove the Saab and there wasn't a contest. And let's be honest, Saabs don't have the best manuals in the world. Even so, no matter how good an automatic is it can't compare.
FIne, so you'll only miss it 5 percent of the time--but my God!! Life is short! You'll give up 5 percent? Sounds steep to me. It's all about that last 5 percent, in my experience. Personally, I'm in for the last slurp, traffic or not.
