I have full StonGard kits on both my wife's 16 month old Audi A4, as well as my new Aero Wagon. Both kits were installed by the main StonGard office/shop in Belleview WA on the new cars before we took delivery. I think that it's much better than a bra or bug shield, but it does have some disadvantages (besides the cost!)
On dark paint the edges will show dried wax and polish as a white line. If you can live with that, fine. But anal types like me waste a lot of time and anguish picking apart those lines. I have yet to find an easy and effective way to get the stuff off without scratching the finish. A fingernail seems to work best. Does anyone have a better method?
I am in the middle of polishing and waxing the Audi. It has 14,000 pampered miles, but the StonGard already has some marks from fairly big rock strikes. The film _does_ scratch and mar. You cannot expect it to stay as pristine as the day it was installed. On door edges especially, you will see some degradation from bumping into other cars or the garage wall. If you rub the film when it is dirty and dry, the film will scratch. Even a finger rubbed vigorously on it (dry) will mar the smoothness. Lexan it is NOT.
On the other hand, those blemishes represent damage that did not make it to the paint. I found a rather major impact mark on one of the headlight films that would surely have shattered the glass. I believe a replacement Audi light assembly is $230 USD.) The mark the rock left is only obvious if you are staring at it closely.
If the film is installed professionally, the installation is warranted forever. This warranty does not cover blemishes due to impacts or abuse, but if the film is incorrectly installed, or starts to lift somewhere, the shop will replace that part free of charge.
I think the pluses outweigh the minuses by a large amount. Until someone invents an impenetrable force field that will completely surround the car, StonGard seems to be the best solution to minimizing paint and light damage.
If you have any specific questions, fire away and I will try to answer them.
