Sorry to hear about the scuff/swirl's. I think you said you had a black Aero - those are tough to keep clean but they do look GREAT, especially with the BBS wheel package. I did a similar thing. I've got a scratch on my roof where I tried to clean up a some bird droppings. Apparently, the bird had eaten a seed of some sort and I managed to scratch the roof with that. DAMN. Now I'm VERY VERY careful with any cleaning. I'd rather have some droppings on the car for a day or two than scratch it again.
Anyway, I recommend a high pressure spray to break most anything loose. I then use 2 very soft cotton mits and hand wash the car. I always start at the top (where it's usually pretty clean) and work down. I also rinse the glove often and have a "dirty" glove for the really dirty areas like around the wheels and front air damn. At least I'm not carry dirt onto the hood with the glove this way. Generally speaking though, just don't rub hard and you should be okay. Anything that doesn't want to come out with some soap and water generally just needs longer to soak in the soap. That said, I do have a couple minor sap spots from sitting under a tree. I'm going to have to use something a little more agressive to get those out - I tried a polish/cleanser on it and it worked but I was very careful.
A wax probably won't do anything - it's really just a protective layer. A polish might but as I said, I'm reluctant to use anything like that.
I can't tell you how much I hate birds and trees some days. I noticed last year that all the flies were attracted to my Silver Aero and a Metallic Silver MB C280. They weren't touching any other cars, including some other silver ones (but none shone as brightly as mine and the MB). I noticed it multiple times actually - weird. Drove me kinda crazy actually - walking up to a fly covered car...
