I've used the Garmin Street Pilot in my 9-5 with good success. However it is not as slick as the built in DVD based systems offered in the latest luxury cars. Using the Street Pilot is relatively easy and you can purchase CD's that allow programming massive databases of the entire USA. The unit also has a neat trip computer that keeps track of distance, overall average speed, driving average, stopped time, total time and maximum speed reached. Price is about $500 for the unit including 1 data base memory chip with detailed maps for a local area plus a built in database with all major US highways. The unit is portable, operates on batteries or car power (you need to buy a cord) and can be updated to the latest software version via computer if you buy the data cable.
On a cross country trip (literally), I always knew exactly where I was and felt totally comfortable with the units' ability to navigate accurately.
