Auto trannies are made to upshift/downshift no problem - there's really no friction material to wear like with a clutch. Most owners manuals will even recommend downshifting on long hills (that's why you have those other selections besides "drive").
Now with a manual tranny, there's a little more controversy. Myself, I use the tranny to decelerate, even coming up on a red light. IMO, as long as you rev-match as you downshift, there's no reason not to. Others feel that it wears out the clutch, but I drove my last car, an Integra, 178k miles over 11 years and never had a problem with the clutch. Brake pads lasted 70k-90k miles.
