The condition you describe is mmor than likely carbon deposites on the exhaust valves. This problem is common for early 9-5's. The condition mostly occurs at highway speeds under light throttle application. It can also be diagnosed as a automatic gearbox problem(if you have an automatic). I've posted a fix a couple of times on this web site for the problem(a fix from the factory i found). It involves the engine ingesting a top engine cleaner through a vacuum line connected to the throttle body(below the throttle butterfly). Do this at about 1500 RPM with a pair of pliers meetering the amount of fluid entering the engine. Do this until about half to three quarters of the cleaner have passed through the engine. Turn the ignition off and let the engine sit for about a hour. Then put the rest of the top engine cleaner through the engine. Take the car out and drive it hard for about five miles. The problem should disappear. This problem has been corrected on later vehicles by adding a non stick coating to the valves.
If this was a fuel injection hardware problem, the check enging lamp would illuminate and the control unit would provide a code. A good dealer would be aware of the problem.
