I ended up just removing the crank pulley. The compressor and air tools I bought last month as an early x-mas present to myself have really paid off.
The dealer was also out of upper idlers. I stole the idler off my NG because it's actually the same part. 9-5 upper idler changed in 99.75 or so (not the same VIN break as the brakes).
Another note -- one of the ribs had become wrapped around the inside of the water pump, I wouldn't have noticed except for a shard that kept me from getting the belt on. I wouldn't have gotten too far with that chunk in there. So, P/S pump moves, voila, some access to water pump...
Wheels: I tried driving for the rears, I had to get at least one front off 'some other way' to do the belt and a few thousand blows with a mallet did the trick. The finish on the stock 5-spokes stands up amazingly well to that sort of abuse. I wire brushed and greased the hubs, it was just the center portion, the rest of the mating surfaces were clean. And on went the Blizzaks.
