The mechanisms seem to have little or no lubrication ex factory. I can see why you don't want grease around an assembly line. These brakes have been a PIA since the 1960's! I want them to go away. I have suffered through this crap with Volvo's and now my second Saab.
These brakes need preventative maintenance (PM). You need to remove the calipers, rotors and clean and lube the mechanism. You cannot wait until the rear rotors wear out. And you need to remove the rotor index bolt and resear it with never sieze as when you first get a vehicle, and tighen very little. If you wait the bolt may be a write off.
So you need to invest the labor or money to do that PM work, or spend the same amount later on and pay for new p-brake shoes too. Those are expensive and I have never seen aftermarket alternatives.
